In the morning, drive about 70 km (1–1.5 hours) to Heavenly Lake of Tianshan (天山天池), part of the UNESCO-listed Tianshan Mountains. Located at about 1,980 meters, this alpine lake is surrounded by forests and snow-capped peaks, with beautiful views of Bogda Mountain. Take a sightseeing bus into the scenic area, followed by a short walk to the lake. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the lakeside and take in the mountain scenery and fresh air. Optional Activities (additional fee): 1. Boat Ride: Enjoy the lake and surrounding mountain views from the water. 2. Cableway Ride: Ride up to Mayashan for a higher viewpoint over the Tianshan Mountains. Then, return to Urumqi and visit the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar. Walk through its shops and stalls filled with local crafts, carpets, spices, dried fruits, and other Xinjiang specialties. It is also a good place to experience local food and everyday life. AOT Expert Tip: Heavenly Lake is at a higher altitude and can be cooler than Urumqi. Bring a light jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes, even in summer. After the tour, return to your hotel in Urumqi.

Surrounded by desert and the Flaming Mountains, Turpan developed through its remarkable underground water system and became a major center for trade and cultural exchange. Upon arrival, drive through the Flaming Mountains to Tuyoq Valley. Stop at Mazar Village, one of the oldest Uyghur villages in Xinjiang. Walk among its traditional mud-brick houses and see a quieter side of local life beneath the red mountains. Next, visit Jiaohe Ancient City, one of the best-preserved ancient city ruins along the Silk Road and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on a natural plateau between two river valleys, Jiaohe was once an important trading and military center. Walk through the ruins of homes, government buildings, temples, and Buddhist stupas. Continue to the Karez System, Turpan's ancient underground irrigation network. Learn how water from the Tianshan Mountains was carried through underground channels to support farming and life in this dry oasis. Then visit Emin Minaret, the tallest Islamic minaret in Xinjiang. Its distinctive brickwork and Uyghur-Islamic design reflect another important part of Turpan's cultural heritage. AOT Expert Tip: Turpan is hot, dry, and sunny, especially in summer. Bring enough water, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes. Jiaohe Ancient City has little shade, so avoid unnecessary exposure to the midday sun. If traveling by high-speed train, transfer to Turpan North Station and take the train to Liuyuan South Station. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and driver for the 120 km (about 2 hours) transfer to Dunhuang. If a suitable direct flight is available, transfer to Jiaohe Airport and fly to Dunhuang in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Welcome to Dunhuang, one of the most important stops on the ancient Silk Road. This desert oasis is famous for the Mogao Caves, Mingsha Sand Dunes, and Crescent Lake, where Silk Road history meets the landscapes of the Gobi Desert. Today, explore two highlights of Dunhuang: the Mogao Caves and Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Lake. The visiting order may be adjusted according to the Mogao Caves reservation time, weather, and local conditions. Visit the Mogao Caves (莫高窟), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most important collections of Buddhist art. Created over more than 1,000 years, the caves preserve remarkable murals, sculptures, and Buddhist stories that reflect the cultural exchange along the ancient Silk Road. Your visit usually starts at the Mogao Caves Digital Center, followed by a shuttle bus to the cave area. With a regular Ticket A, you will normally visit 8 caves with a site interpreter. The caves open each day are decided by the site. Photography is not allowed inside the caves. You will also visit Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Lake (鸣沙山月牙泉), where high sand dunes surround a crescent-shaped oasis in the Gobi Desert. Walk through the scenic area and enjoy the contrast of sand dunes and clear spring water. Optional activities such as camel riding, sand sliding, and desert vehicles are available at your own expense. If you have free time in the evening, you can visit Shazhou Night Market on your own for local food and snacks. AOT Expert Tip: The Mogao Caves are the priority today. Tickets are limited and visits follow fixed reservation times, so we may adjust the order of today's sightseeing based on your confirmed Mogao Caves entry time. Please follow your guide's arrangement for the smoothest visit. Notes: 1. The Mogao Caves use a real-name reservation system with daily visitor limits. Regular Ticket A includes 8 caves and 2 digital films. Emergency Ticket B is mainly for domestic visitors and includes 4 caves and the Cave Artifacts Conservation and Research Exhibition Center. 2. Driving: ~400km, 5 hours Physical Note: Overhanging Great Wall trail involves 400+ steps, steep in sections Today, drive about 400 km (5 hours) from Dunhuang to Jiayuguan, continuing east along the historic Hexi Corridor. Here, you will see where two great routes of ancient China meet: the Silk Road and the Great Wall. First, visit the Overhanging Great Wall (悬壁长城), a section of the Ming Great Wall built along a steep mountainside. Climb more than 400 steps to the upper watchtower for wide views of the Gobi Desert, mountains, and surrounding oasis. Then, explore Jiayuguan Pass (嘉峪关关城), the westernmost major pass of the Ming Great Wall and part of the UNESCO-listed Great Wall. Walk along the fortress walls and towers and learn how this strategic pass once controlled travel between China's Central Plains and the Western Regions along the Silk Road. You can also experience an ancient-style pass permit at Jiayuguan Fortress at your own expense. AOT Expert Tip: Today includes a long drive followed by walking and climbing at the Great Wall. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection. If you prefer less climbing, you can enjoy the lower sections of the Overhanging Great Wall at a more relaxed pace. Along the way, explore the colorful landscapes of Zhangye Danxia, then continue to Zhangye city for the Dafo Temple. Visit Zhangye National Geopark (张掖七彩丹霞), famous for its spectacular Rainbow Mountains. Layers of red, orange, yellow, and other colors stretch across the hills, creating one of the most distinctive landscapes in Northwest China. Explore the scenic area by shuttle bus, stopping at several observation decks for different views of the Danxia landforms. Some viewpoints require uphill walking, but you can explore at your own pace. Continue to Dafo Temple (大佛寺) in Zhangye. Built during the Western Xia Dynasty, the temple is best known for its impressive 34.5-meter-long reclining Buddha. Explore the historic halls, Buddhist art, murals, and scriptures while learning about Zhangye's role in the spread of Buddhism and cultural exchange along the Silk Road. AOT Expert Tip: Zhangye is a good example of why this Silk Road route is more than a history tour. In one day, you experience both the natural landscapes of Northwest China and the Buddhist heritage of the Hexi Corridor. Notes: 1. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Some observation decks at Zhangye Danxia involve steps and uphill walking. 2. Optional activities such as camel rides, hot-air balloons, gliders, and helicopters may be available at Zhangye Danxia at an additional cost, subject to weather and operation conditions. 3. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and driver and continue about 145 km (2.5–3 hours) to Qinghai Lake. At an altitude of about 3,194 meters, Qinghai Lake (青海湖) is China's largest inland saltwater lake. Enjoy wide views of the blue lake, grasslands, and distant mountains. From July to August, you may also see beautiful fields of yellow rapeseed flowers along the way. Visit the Erlangjian Scenic Area (二郎剑景区), one of the best places to enjoy panoramic views of Qinghai Lake. You can walk along the lakeshore or choose optional activities such as a lake cruise, horseback riding, or cycling at your own expense. After your visit, drive about 153 km (2.5 hours) along Qinghai Lake to Chaka Town (3,100 meters). AOT Expert Tip: Today you enter the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with elevations above 3,000 meters. Explore the famous “Mirror of the Sky” Scenic Area, where the shallow salt lake can reflect the blue sky, clouds, and distant mountains. Start from the observation area for a panoramic view, then walk along the salt flats and enjoy time for photography. You can also take the sightseeing train deeper into the scenic area for wider views of the white salt flats and lake. When conditions allow, wear shoe covers and walk on the shallow lake surface for the classic “walking on the mirror” experience. After your visit, drive about 300 km (3.5–4 hours) back to Xining. Stay overnight in downtown Xining. AOT Expert Tip: The famous mirror reflection at Chaka depends on weather, wind, and water conditions, so it cannot be guaranteed. Calm, clear conditions usually provide better reflections. Even without a perfect mirror effect, the vast salt landscape is well worth experiencing. Useful Tips: - Bring sunglasses and sun protection. The bright salt surface can create strong glare. - Shoe covers are available at an additional cost if you want to walk on the lake surface. - Follow the designated walking areas and your guide's instructions when entering the salt lake. - Today includes a 3.5–4 hour drive back to Xining, so keep the return journey in mind when planning your time at the lake.

You will also discover its famous Three Arts of Kumbum: butter sculptures, murals, and appliqué thangka, which reflect the rich artistic traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
