5 Days Tokyo & Kyoto Small Group Tour by Shinkansen

Day 1 · Tokyo Arrival | Independent Transfer & Hotel Check-in

Overview: Upon your arrival in Tokyo, Japan, head to your hotel on your own.

Attractions: /

Activities: /

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Tokyo

Konnichiwa! Welcome to Tokyo. After clearing immigration and collecting your luggage, make your own way to the designated 4-star hotel in Tokyo . Airport pickup is not included in this group tour. Check in and relax after your flight. If time allows, explore the neighborhood or enjoy dinner at a nearby restaurant at your own expense. Your guided sightseeing begins tomorrow. Local Japan Expert's Advice – Getting to Your Hotel: From Haneda Airport (HND): Central Tokyo is approximately 20–30 km away. Allow around 30–60 minutes by taxi or airport bus. The Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa in approximately 15 minutes; continue to your hotel by train or taxi. From Narita Airport (NRT): Central Tokyo is approximately 60–80 km away by road. Allow around 60–90 minutes or longer by airport bus or taxi. The Narita Express serves Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, and Shinjuku. The Keisei Skyliner reaches Nippori or Ueno in around 40 minutes, followed by onward transport to your hotel. i Local Tips for AOT Group Tour Travelers: Arriving at Haneda: Trains are usually an economical choice, with frequent services and less disruption from road traffic. Arriving at Narita: Consider an airport bus for hotels near Tokyo Station, the Skyliner for Ueno, or the Access Express for Asakusa. Traveling with large luggage: Choose a route with fewer transfers. An airport bus may be easier if it stops near your hotel, even if the journey takes longer. Taking a taxi: Taxis offer convenience but are generally more expensive, especially when traveling alone from Narita to central Tokyo. Note: Once your group departure is confirmed, your AOT travel advisor will send you the hotel name and details before your trip. They will also recommend how to reach the hotel based on your international flight's arrival airport and time.

Day 2 · Tokyo Tour | Meiji Jingu Shrine, Shibuya Crossing, Hachiko statue, Senso-ji Temple, Overlook Tokyo Skytree Tower, Tsukiji Fish Market

Overview: During the Tokyo group tour, visit Meiji Jingu Shrine, Shibuya Crossing, the Hachiko Statue, Senso-ji Temple, enjoy an overlook of Tokyo Skytree Tower, and explore Tsukiji Fish Market.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Tokyo

After breakfast, meet your guide and driver at the hotel for a full-day Tokyo tour with your small group. Begin at Meiji Jingu Shrine , dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Its forested grounds offer a peaceful contrast to the surrounding city. Follow the gravel paths beneath wooden torii gates and pass rows of donated sake barrels. At the main sanctuary, your guide will explain Shinto purification and worship customs. Continue to Shibuya Crossing , where crowds cross from several directions as the traffic lights change. Join the pedestrian flow and take in the giant screens and busy streets around you. Nearby, visit the Hachiko statue , which commemorates the dog remembered for returning to Shibuya Station to wait for his owner. Around lunchtime, explore Tsukiji Outer Market . Its narrow lanes are filled with seafood stalls, specialty food shops, and kitchenware stores. Browse fresh ingredients and discover the flavors behind Japanese cooking. Choose sushi, a seafood rice bowl, or local snacks for lunch at your own expense . In the afternoon, visit Senso-ji Temple , one of Tokyo's oldest and most beloved Buddhist temples. Enter through Kaminarimon , marked by its giant red lantern, and follow Nakamise Street past traditional snack and souvenir shops. At the main hall, learn about Kannon, the Buddhist deity of compassion. Admire the five-story pagoda and watch visitors offering prayers. Enjoy distant views of Tokyo Skytree from the Asakusa area, weather permitting. The modern tower rising beyond the traditional streets offers a striking contrast between old and new Tokyo. Tower admission is not included. After sightseeing, return to your hotel. Stay overnight in Tokyo. i Local Japan Expert Tip Visit Tsukiji around lunchtime: Many shops close by mid-afternoon. This tour visits Tsukiji Outer Market, not Toyosu Market or its tuna auction. Carry some yen: Cash is useful for snacks and small purchases. Eat at the shop or in designated areas rather than while walking. Follow group meeting times: Shibuya and Nakamise Street can be crowded. Confirm the meeting point with your guide before browsing. Respect shrine customs: Follow photography signs at Meiji Jingu. Its Inner Garden and Museum are separately ticketed and are not part of the scheduled group visit.

Day 3 · Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen (Bullet Train) | Kinkakuji Temple, Nijo Castle

Overview: Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen. Have half-day visit in Kyoto: Kinkakuji Temple and Nijo Castle.

Activities: Shinkansen, Vehicle

Meals: 早餐

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Kyoto

After breakfast, your driver will transfer your group to the departure train station in Tokyo. No guide accompanies the Tokyo transfer or train journey. Use the tickets and boarding instructions provided by AOT to board the Shinkansen to Kyoto . The journey covers approximately 500 km and takes around 2–3 hours, depending on the confirmed train service. Settle into your seat and watch Japan's cities, fields, and mountain landscapes pass by. At Kyoto Station, meet your local guide and driver at the designated meeting point. Begin an afternoon exploring Japan's former capital, known for its historic temples, gardens, and traditional architecture. Visit Kinkakuji Temple (the Golden Pavilion) , a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its upper two floors are covered in gold leaf, creating a striking reflection in the surrounding pond. Follow the garden paths to admire the pavilion from different viewpoints. Originally a shogun's retirement villa, it later became a Zen Buddhist temple. Continue to Nijo Castle , another UNESCO World Heritage site. Built as the Kyoto residence of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, its grand gates and ornate interiors display the power of Japan's former rulers. Explore Ninomaru Palace , with its decorative paintings and “nightingale floors,” which chirp underfoot. Then stroll through Ninomaru Garden , known for its landscaped pond and carefully arranged rocks. After sightseeing, transfer to your 4-star hotel in Kyoto and check in. i Local Japan Expert Tip Boarding without a guide: Keep your ticket and AOT's instructions handy. Check the train number, departure time, car number, and seat number carefully. Follow the station signs to your platform and board the correct carriage. Traveling with luggage: You will handle your own luggage at both stations. Tell your advisor about oversized suitcases before departure so the required arrangements can be checked. Meeting in Kyoto: Save the meeting-point instructions and local contact details before leaving Tokyo. Go to the designated meeting point after getting off the train.

Day 4 · Kyoto Tour | Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Kiyomizudera Temple, Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka, Yasaka Shrine, Gion

Overview: Explore Kyoto on a group tour that includes visits to Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Kiyomizudera Temple, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka streets, Yasaka Shrine, and the historic Gion district.

Attractions: 6 Sites

Activities: Vehicle

Meals: 早餐

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Kyoto

After breakfast, meet your guide and driver for a full day discovering Kyoto's living traditions, sacred sites, and historic streets . Start early at Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine , famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates. Walk through the gateways on the lower hillside and learn how donations from individuals and businesses express wishes for prosperity. Look for fox statues, regarded as messengers of Inari, the deity associated with rice and agriculture. Continue to Kiyomizudera Temple , a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking eastern Kyoto. Its wooden stage extends over the hillside, offering views of the city and seasonal foliage. Explore the temple grounds and see Otowa Waterfall , whose three streams are traditionally associated with wishes for longevity, academic success, and love. From the temple, walk downhill through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka . These stone-paved lanes are lined with traditional wooden buildings, pottery shops, sweet stalls, and tea houses. Discover Kyoto crafts and browse local specialties, with snacks and purchases at your own expense. Continue to Yasaka Shrine , closely connected with Kyoto's famous Gion Matsuri festival. Admire its colorful buildings and lantern-lined dance pavilion. Your guide will explain how the shrine remains part of the city's religious and community life. Finish in Gion , Kyoto's renowned geiko and maiko district. Stroll along public streets lined with wooden townhouses and traditional tea houses. Learn about the performing arts and years of training behind this distinctive Kyoto tradition. You may see geiko or maiko heading to appointments, but sightings are not guaranteed. After sightseeing, return to your hotel. Stay overnight in Kyoto. i Local Japan Expert Tip Expect a walking day: Wear comfortable shoes for shrine paths, slopes, and stone steps. The Fushimi Inari visit focuses on the lower shrine area rather than a full mountain hike. Enjoy the culture respectfully: Follow your guide's advice on shrine customs and photography. Keep entrances and narrow lanes clear when stopping for photos. Seasonal views: Spring brings cherry blossoms around Kiyomizudera, while autumn adds colorful foliage to its hillside setting. Summer offers lush greenery, and winter reveals clearer views through bare branches. Bloom and foliage timing varies each year.

Day 5 · Kyoto Departure | Independent Transfer to Kansai International Airport

Overview: Depart from Kyoto to Osaka and transfer to the airport on your own.

Activities: /

Meals: 早餐

Accommodation: /

After breakfast, check out of your hotel as your 5-day Japan group tour comes to an end. Make your own way to Kansai International Airport (KIX) for your departure flight. Airport transfer is not included. If you would like AOT to arrange a private airport transfer at an additional cost, please contact our travel experts in advance. Thank you for traveling with Asia Odyssey Travel. Have a safe journey home! i Local Japan Expert Tip – Getting to the Airport By train: Take the JR Haruka Express directly from Kyoto Station to Kansai Airport Station. Allow approximately 80–90 minutes, depending on the service, plus travel time from your hotel to Kyoto Station. By airport bus: Direct buses depart from Kyoto Station's Hachijo Exit. Allow approximately 90–120 minutes, depending on traffic and your departure terminal. This can be convenient when traveling with large luggage. Plan your departure: Kyoto to KIX is approximately 100 km by road. Aim to reach the airport three hours before an international flight, allowing extra time for station connections or traffic. Early flights: Check the first train or bus before booking your flight. A private transfer with Asia Odyssey Travel may be more practical for an early departure. i Extend Your Trip Have more time in Japan? Extend your stay in Kyoto to explore Arashiyama's bamboo grove, or visit Uji for tea culture and Byodoin Temple. Continue to Nara for ancient temples and freely roaming deer, or spend a night or two in Osaka for food, shopping, and an optional visit to Universal Studios Japan.
