Today, explore two highlights of Dunhuang: the Mogao Caves and Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Lake. The visiting order may be adjusted according to the Mogao Caves reservation time, weather, and local conditions. Visit the Mogao Caves (莫高窟), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most important collections of Buddhist art. Optional activities such as camel riding, sand sliding, and desert vehicles are available at your own expense. If you have free time in the evening, you can visit Shazhou Night Market on your own for local food and snacks. AOT Expert Tip: The Mogao Caves are the priority today. Tickets are limited and visits follow fixed reservation times, so we may adjust the order of today's sightseeing based on your confirmed Mogao Caves entry time. Please follow your guide's arrangement for the smoothest visit. Notes: 1. The Mogao Caves use a real-name reservation system with daily visitor limits. Regular Ticket A includes 8 caves and 2 digital films. Emergency Ticket B is mainly for domestic visitors and includes 4 caves and the Cave Artifacts Conservation and Research Exhibition Center. 2. Day 3 · Dunhuang to Jiayuguan | Overhanging Great Wall, Jiayuguan Pass
Overview: Drive from Dunhuang to Jiayuguan, visit Jiayuguan's attractions - Overhanging Great Wall, Jiayuguan Pass. (B)
Attractions: 2 sites
Activities: coach
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Jiayuguan
Driving: ~400km, 5 hours Physical Note: Overhanging Great Wall trail involves 400+ steps, steep in sections Today, you will head to Jiayuguan (400km, 5hrs) to explore Jiayuguan City for the Great Wall on the Cliff (Overhanging Great Wall) & the Jiayuguan Pass (Jiayuguan Fortress). Climb the Overhanging Great Wall (悬壁长城), acclaimed as the Great Wall's "end point." Built in 1539 (Ming Dynasty) as the northern extension of Jiayuguan Pass, only 750 meters remain, with the steepest section reaching 45 degrees—giving it a look of hanging in mid-air. Follow the kid-friendly trail (400+ steps) to the highest watchtower for sweeping views of desert, oasis, and beacon towers, while discovering remnants of ancient military defense. After that, visit Jiayuguan Pass (嘉峪关关城), built in 1372 and known as one of the "Three Great Passes of the Great Wall (Shanhaiguan Pass in the east, Zhenbeitai Terrace in the middle, and Jiayuguan Pass in the west)." As the westernmost pass of the Ming Great Wall in the Hexi Corridor, this UNESCO World Heritage site showcases majestic ancient military architecture nestled against mountains and water, earning its renowned title "The Impregnable Pass under Heaven" (天下第一雄关). From the Jiayuguan Pass walls, you can see the Great Wall traversing the desert and the Gobi, while the beautiful Qilian Mountains (祁连山Snow Mountains) and the Heishan Mountains (黑山) act as natural barriers, stretching across the north and south of Jiayuguan. At Jiayuguan Pass, you may purchase a souvenir-style historic pass and take part in a themed gate-crossing experience, subject to availability. Jiayuguan Pass is one of the best-preserved gate cities along the Great Wall, with three overlapping defense lines—inner city, outer city, and moat—forming a military system of watchtowers, beacon towers, and fortresses at regular intervals. Set against the Qilian Snow Mountains, this oasis of lakes and lush greenery also makes for a rare summer retreat. Overnight in Jiayuguan.
Day 4 · Jiayuguan to Zhangye | Zhangye National Geopark (Zhangye Danxia Geological Park), Dafo Temple (Big Buddha Temple)
Overview: Head to Zhangye to view the colorful landscape of rainbow-hued sandstone formations. And visit Dafo Temple in Zhangye city. (B)

Accommodation: Zhangye
Driving:~225km, 3.5 hours Physical Note: Some uphill walking at Zhangye National Geopark; comfortable shoes recommended Today, you will head to explore Zhangye City (225 km, about 3.5 hours) for Dafo Temple. Along the way, you'll stop to explore Zhangye National Geopark. Zhangye National Geopark (Zhangye Colorful Danxia Scenic Spot 七彩丹霞景区) is famed for its striking "Rainbow Mountains," China's only area combining Danxia landforms with colorful hilly terrain. Ranked among the world's top ten geographical wonders and a filming site for Zhang Yimou's The Great Wall and Disney's Mulan, these formations took shape roughly 65-135 million years ago through the Himalayan orogeny and long-term erosion, as oxidizing iron in the sandstone and mudstone created hues of red, brown, yellow-green, and bluish-gray. The scenic area features five Observation Decks connected by shuttle buses (entering/exiting via the north gate, stopping in order #2-1-5-4). Decks #1 and #4 are most recommended: Yunhai Platform (云海台), the largest, offers panoramic views of the winding S-shaped road, while Hongxia Platform (虹霞台) boasts the most vibrant colors and best sunset views. Look for unique formations like the Rainbow Screen, Sleeping Beauty, and Giant Scallop (七彩屏、睡美人、大扇贝), where the mountaintop unfolds like a watercolor painting. Notes: 1. Comfortable shoes are essential as climbing uphill sections may occur. 2. The scenic area also offers entertainment options such as camel rides, hot air balloons, gliders, helicopters, and other activities (at an additional cost). Continue to Zhangye city to visit Dafo Temple (大佛寺), known for its 34.5-meter reclining Buddha and locally called the "Reclining Buddha Temple" (卧佛寺). Built in 1098 as a royal temple of the Western Xia Dynasty, it's one of China's Four Remaining Royal Temples. Legend holds that Kublai Khan was born here, and Marco Polo stayed a year, captivated by its grandeur. Covering over 60,000 m², it once held 5,000 worshippers at once. As China's only surviving Western Xia temple and home to Asia's largest indoor reclining Buddha, it functions as a living Buddhist art museum. The 900-year-old Grand Buddha Hall features murals inspired by Journey to the West, predating the novel by roughly 200 years, alongside a scripture hall displaying artifacts like the gold-and-silver Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra and Persian silver coins—evidence of the temple's role in Silk Road trade. Note: Currently, the reclining Buddha statue in Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple is undergoing digital restoration, covered by scaffolding. The project is expected to be completed by June 2025. Stay Overnight in Zhangye City.
