Exploring these ancient ruins allows travelers to imagine historic merchants, monks, and explorers passing through, while marveling at how Tajik ancestors crafted such an architectural marvel over a millennium ago without modern equipment. Next, explore the Golden Grasslands (金草滩) beneath Stone City. Fed by the Tashkurgan River, this Alar National Wetland Park sanctuary features sprawling meadows, grazing livestock, and felt tents framed by snow-capped mountains. At dusk, the setting sun bathes the landscape in a brilliant golden glow, giving this spectacular wetlands area its famous name. Lastly, you will leave Tashkurgan and drive back to Kashgar city along the scenic China-Pakistan Highway. This journey is not merely a return trip but a continuous discovery of the profound and majestic beauty that defines the Pamir Plateau. You'll have the opportunity to admire the spectacular snow-capped peaks from various angles on both sides. Today, the area is dotted with historic treasures, including ancient city ruins, desert fortresses, and centuries-old Buddhist cave complexes showcasing its rich cultural heritage. Drive along the iconic Flaming Mountains, famous for intense heat and glowing red sandstone stretching over 100 kilometers across the desert. After stopping for photos of these striking eroded cliffs, follow the cliffside road into Tuyoq Valley to visit Mazar Village (麻扎村). Tip: there's no shelter inside the ruins, so bring sun protection. Head to the Karez System (坎儿井), an ancient underground irrigation network with a history of over 2,000 years that transformed barren desert into lush oasis, considered one of China's three great engineering projects alongside the Great Wall and Grand Canal, and named to the 2024 World Irrigation Project Heritage list. Often called the "Underground Great Wall," Xinjiang's 1,700+ karez wells would stretch over 5,000 kilometers if connected. Step inside to uncover how ancient people built this mysterious hydraulic marvel without modern tools. Continue to Emin Minaret (额敏塔), also known as Sugong Ta (苏公塔), the tallest Islamic minaret in Xinjiang. Built in 1778 by ruler Suleiman to honor his father Emin Khoja, the 44-meter sun-dried brick tower tapers elegantly to an ornate dome. Uyghur artisans crafted up to 15 brick patterns—waves, diamonds, florals—into looping designs. Visit the accompanying mosque, a cultural icon blending Islamic and Uyghur traditions.
